What mole removal does

The method is chosen after assessment, to remove the lesion properly with as little scarring as possible.

Is mole removal right for you?

Before anything is removed he checks the lesion looks benign. Anything suspicious goes for proper assessment first, and that is not negotiable.

It usually suits

  • A benign mole or skin lesion you want gone
  • It catches on clothing, a razor or jewellery
  • You want it assessed by a doctor rather than a technician
  • You accept a small mark where it was

It is the wrong treatment if

  • The lesion is changing, and needs proper assessment or a biopsy first
  • There is an active skin infection in the area
  • A condition or medication that impairs wound healing, where it should wait
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding

What to expect

01Before you arrive
Stop retinoids, acids, vitamin C and scrubs a week beforehand. If you take blood thinners, speak to your prescribing doctor first.
02Assessment
He examines the lesion and confirms it looks benign before anything is planned. Photographs are taken for your records.
03The plan
He tells you which method suits it: laser, shave, or surgical excision.
04Numbing
Local anaesthetic. Once it is in, the removal itself is essentially painless.
05The removal
15 to 30 minutes. Surgical excision is closed with fine sutures.
06Going home
Keep it clean and dry. If you have sutures they come out in the clinic.
  • Keep the treated area clean and dry for the first 24 hours.
  • No make-up over the area for 24 to 48 hours, or until he says otherwise.
  • No retinol, acids or vitamin C for 24 hours.
  • No strenuous exercise, sauna or hot bath for 24 hours.
  • Do not pick the crust. Let it come away on its own.
  • Keep it out of the sun completely until it has healed, then use SPF 50.

If you are unwell, or you are under the care of another doctor, tell him before you book.
