Why it happens
The skin under the eye is the thinnest on the body, so what sits beneath it shows through.
The fat pad under the eye can shrink, leaving a hollow, or slip forward, leaving a bag.
Skin on the upper lid loosens and can eventually rest on the lashes.
How you know
- A shadow under the eye that is worse in overhead light
- A groove running from the inner corner across the top of the cheek
- Upper lid skin that touches the lashes when your eyes are open
If more than one of these sounds like you, that is normal. Most people have two or three things happening at once, which is part of why he assesses before recommending anything.

Common questions about ageing eyes
Will filler fix my dark circles?
Only if they are a shadow cast by a hollow. If the darkness is pigment in the skin, filler does nothing for it and can make the area look puffy.
Why is the under eye treated so cautiously?
Because it is the least forgiving area on the face. Too much product there looks worse than the hollow did, and it is slow to settle. Doing too little is always the safer error.
When is surgery the answer?
When the problem is excess skin rather than lost volume. No injection removes skin.
