What CO2 laser does
The laser removes the damaged surface in a controlled way, and the skin rebuilds.
It is particularly effective on deep, pitted acne scars, which do not improve with skincare.
It also removes moles and tightens skin on the face, around the eyes and on the neck.
Is CO2 laser right for you?
This is the one with real downtime. You will not be presentable for about a week, and pretending otherwise helps nobody.
It usually suits
- Scarring, texture or sun damage that creams have not touched
- You can give up a week
- You are prepared to stay out of the sun afterwards
- You want one strong treatment rather than a course
It is the wrong treatment if
- You cannot take a week away from people
- You have an active skin infection in the area
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
What to expect
- 01Before you arrive
- Stop retinoids and acids at least a week beforehand, and stay out of the sun.
- 02The consultation
- He assesses the skin, confirms the plan and photographs the area.
- 03Numbing
- Numbing cream is applied and left to work. Most people describe the treatment as mild with it on.
- 04The treatment
- 30 to 60 minutes depending on the area.
- 05Straight after
- The skin is warm and pink, similar to strong sunburn.
- 06Going home
- Vaseline or Aquaphor to soothe it. No make-up and no exercise for 48 hours.
- Use plain aftercare and a high factor SPF. Nothing active.
- No make-up for 48 hours.
- No exercise for 48 hours.
- Do not pick at flaking skin. Let it come away on its own.
- Use Vaseline or Aquaphor to soothe the area.
- Stay out of direct sun completely while it heals.
A summary. Dr Sultan emails a full written aftercare sheet after your procedure.
- Days 1 to 2
- Warmth, mild swelling and pinpoint bleeding.
- Days 2 to 4
- The skin feels tight and crusting begins. Early healing is visible.
- Days 4 to 6
- It gets itchy as it heals. Do not scratch it.
- Days 5 to 7
- Most people are comfortable seeing others again. Pinkness fades over the following days.
- 6 to 9 months
- Collagen keeps remodelling. The result improves long after the skin has healed.
What CO2 laser is used for
- Lines and wrinkles
- Lines that appear when you move and lines that are there when your face is still are two different problems, and they need two different treatments.
- Acne scarring
- Acne scarring is improved over a course rather than erased in one appointment. Anyone promising otherwise is not being straight with you.
- Ageing hands
- Hands give age away faster than faces do, and they are treated far less often. Usually both volume and skin quality are involved.
- Scars and keloids
- A scar can be made flatter, paler and less obvious. It cannot be removed, because taking a scar out leaves a scar.
- Moles and skin lesions
- Before anything is removed he checks it looks benign. Anything suspicious goes for proper assessment first, and that is not negotiable.
Treatments that work with CO2 laser
- Morpheus8
- Less downtime, worked below the surface rather than on it.
- acne scar treatment
- One of the treatments used in a scarring plan.
- mole removal
- The same laser, used to take a lesion off.
Please read This page describes CO2 laser in general terms. It is not medical advice and it is not a diagnosis. Whether CO2 laser is right for you can only be decided by Dr Sultan after he has examined you. Every procedure carries risks, and he goes through the ones relevant to you at your consultation. If you are unwell, or you are under the care of another doctor, tell him before you book.
Common questions
Does CO2 laser work on acne scars?
Yes. Deep, pitted scars are what it does best, and they will not improve without professional treatment.
How much downtime is there after CO2 laser?
It depends on the depth. Expect several days of redness and peeling at minimum.
How much is a consultation?
A consultation is £150. It covers a full assessment and a written treatment plan.
