Why it happens
A scar is the collagen the body lays down to close a wound, and it is never identical to the skin it replaced.
A keloid is a scar that keeps growing past the edge of the original wound. They itch, they can be sore, and they come back.
How a scar heals depends on where it is, how it happened, and how your own skin scars.
How you know
- A raised scar that has grown wider than the original wound
- A scar that pulls or restricts movement
- A scar that is a different colour or texture from the skin around it
If more than one of these sounds like you, that is normal. Most people have two or three things happening at once, which is part of why he assesses before recommending anything.
What he uses for scars and keloids
Which of these suits you, and whether any of them does, is decided at the consultation. He will say if none of them is right rather than book one.

Common questions about scars and keloids
What is the difference between a keloid and a normal scar?
A keloid keeps growing past the edge of the wound. A normal scar does not. They are managed differently, and keloids are managed over months rather than treated once.
Should I wait before treating a scar?
Usually yes. A new scar is still settling on its own and often improves without help. He will tell you whether yours is mature enough to treat.
Will it come back?
A keloid can. He will tell you what to watch for and what to do if it starts.
Please read This page describes scars and keloids in general terms. It is not medical advice and it is not a diagnosis. What is causing yours, and what would help it, can only be decided by Dr Sultan after he has examined you.
