What keloid treatment does
The aim is to flatten the scar, settle the itching and discomfort, and reduce the chance of it returning.
Keloids on the ears and face are common after piercing.
Is keloid treatment right for you?
Keloid scars are stubborn and they come back. This is managed over months with more than one treatment, and anyone promising one appointment is not being straight with you.
It usually suits
- A raised scar that has grown beyond the original wound
- A keloid that itches or is sore
- A keloid on the earlobe after piercing
- You accept that it needs several sessions
It is the wrong treatment if
- You want it gone in one appointment
- There is an active infection in the area
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
What to expect
- 01The consultation
- He examines the scar, goes through your history and photographs it.
- 02The plan
- He tells you which combination he wants to use: injections, laser, surgery, or more than one of them.
- 03Numbing
- Local anaesthetic where it is needed.
- 04The treatment
- 15 to 30 minutes. Injections are the usual starting point.
- 05Straight after
- Most people go straight back to their day.
- 06Coming back
- Repeated over weeks or months. One session rarely settles a keloid.
- Keep the area clean and dry for 24 hours. Lukewarm water, air dry, no towel.
- No make-up over the area for 24 hours.
- No retinol or vitamin C for 24 hours.
- No sauna, hot bath or jacuzzi for 24 hours.
- No exercise or anything that makes you sweat for 24 hours.
- Stay out of direct sun for 24 hours, then use a broad spectrum SPF 50 with 5 star UVA protection.
A summary. Dr Sultan emails a full written aftercare sheet after your procedure.
- Same day
- Back to normal in most cases.
- Weeks
- The scar begins to flatten and soften. Itching usually settles first.
- Several sessions
- Repeated over weeks or months. This is normal for keloids.
- Long term
- Keloids can recur. He will tell you what to watch for.
What keloid treatment is used for
- Torn or stretched earlobes
- A split or stretched piercing is a small operation with real stitches. Straightforward, done in the chair, home the same day.
- Scars and keloids
- A scar can be made flatter, paler and less obvious. It cannot be removed, because taking a scar out leaves a scar.
Treatments that work with keloid treatment
- scar revision
- For scars that are not keloid, which are treated differently.
- earlobe repair
- Keloids on the earlobe often follow a piercing.
- CO2 laser resurfacing
- One of the treatments used alongside the injections.
Please read This page describes keloid treatment in general terms. It is not medical advice and it is not a diagnosis. Whether keloid treatment is right for you can only be decided by Dr Sultan after he has examined you. Every procedure carries risks, and he goes through the ones relevant to you at your consultation. If you are unwell, or you are under the care of another doctor, tell him before you book.
Common questions
Do keloid scars come back?
They can. Treatment aims to minimise recurrence, which is why the method is chosen carefully.
Is keloid treatment painful?
Steroid injections sting briefly. Local anaesthetic is used for surgical removal.
How much is a consultation?
