What earlobe repair does

Repair may be precise minor surgery, filler to restore lost volume, or laser to refine the skin. Often it is a combination.

Is earlobe repair right for you?

A small operation with real stitches. Straightforward, done in the chair, and you go home the same day.

It usually suits

  • A stretched or split piercing
  • A torn earlobe
  • You want to be re-pierced afterwards, which is usually possible after six to eight weeks
  • You can come back to have sutures removed

It is the wrong treatment if

  • Active infection or skin disease in the area
  • A history of keloid scarring, which needs discussing first
  • Poor wound healing or an uncontrolled condition such as diabetes
  • You cannot follow the aftercare

What to expect

01Before you arrive
Arrive with clean skin, no make-up, no creams and no jewellery. Avoid blood thinners for a few days beforehand if he has advised it.
02The consultation
He examines the earlobes, goes through what you want and plans the repair.
03Numbing
Local anaesthetic injections numb the ear.
04The repair
Damaged or excess tissue is removed and the lobe rebuilt to a natural contour. About 45 minutes per ear.
05Closing it
Closed with very fine sutures.
06Going home
Same day. Sutures come out in the clinic at five to seven days.
  • Keep the area clean and dry for the first 24 to 48 hours.
  • No strenuous activity for a few days.
  • Come back for suture removal at five to seven days.
  • Do not re-pierce until he says so, usually six to eight weeks.
  • Take paracetamol for discomfort. Not ibuprofen, and not other anti-inflammatories.
  • Tell him straight away if it becomes hot, red or more painful rather than less.

Please read This page describes earlobe repair in general terms. It is not medical advice and it is not a diagnosis. Whether earlobe repair is right for you can only be decided by Dr Sultan after he has examined you. Every procedure carries risks, and he goes through the ones relevant to you at your consultation. If you are unwell, or you are under the care of another doctor, tell him before you book.
